Seed Rate: 20–25 kg per acre for fodder purposes.
Spacing: Row-to-row: 18–24 inches; Plant-to-plant: 6–8 inches.
Sowing Depth: Seeds should be sown at a depth of 1.5–2 inches for optimal germination.
Irrigation: First irrigation immediately after sowing. Subsequent irrigations should be every 6–7 days, with emphasis on moisture availability during germination and critical stages like flowering.
Weed Control: Manual weeding or pre-emergent herbicides can be used within 2–3 weeks after sowing to control weeds.
Fertilizer Application
Basal Dose:
Nitrogen (N): 50 kg/acre
Phosphorus (P₂O₅): 30–40 kg/acre
Potassium (K₂O): 20 kg/acre
Top Dressing: Additional 20–25 kg/acre of nitrogen after germination (at the 4–6 leaf
Harvesting Guidelines
Harvest when the plants reach the milk to early dough stage, as this stage has the highest nutrient content for livestock.
Uniform cutting ensures better regrowth, especially for multi-cut varieties.
Farmer Feedback
Farmers have reported good yield potential and excellent growth when the seeds are planted in well-prepared soil with proper irrigation. However, storage and quality checks are critical, as improper handling may affect seed germination
